What Does “Academic Advanced” Mean at Unionville College?

A composite image illustrating the diverse academic and extracurricular opportunities at Unionville College in Markham, featuring diverse groups of students in uniform engaged in hands-on science experiments with a microscope, working together on a collaborative S.T.E.A.M. robotics project with a tablet and laptop, a student using a laptop, a smiling student, two children playing, and a young child in a blue sun hat. The collage includes the Unionville College logo in the top left corner, with background illustrations of the school buildings and a Canadian flag, showcasing a student-centred, grade-by-grade private school curriculum that blends a challenging year-ahead academic program with student well-being from Casa to Secondary. This image highlights inquiry-based learning, differentiated instruction, smaller class sizes, and diverse pathway support for gifted and advanced learners.

At Unionville College in Markham, our Academic Advanced model is built around a year-ahead curriculum that challenges students once foundational skills are secure—without sacrificing well-being or childhood.

From Casa to Secondary, learning is intentionally structured:

Casa: Montessori foundation with early numeracy, phonics, and independence.
Primary (Gr. 1–3): Strong literacy foundations, inquiry learning, and early S.T.E.A.M.
Junior (Gr. 4–6): Cross-curricular projects, research, and presentation skills.
Intermediate (Gr. 7–8): Subject specialists, pre-AP style tasks, and project-based learning.
Secondary: A.P. readiness, leadership opportunities, and personalized university pathway support.

What sets UC apart from many private schools in Toronto is how we combine advanced curriculum with a student-centred, flexible approach: smaller class sizes, differentiated instruction, inquiry tasks with multiple entry points, and strong teacher mentorship. Our gifted and advanced learners are stretched, not stressed.

Success looks different at each stage—reading milestones in early years, science fair projects and public speaking in Junior, rich interdisciplinary work in Intermediate, and AP and leadership achievements in Secondary. November report cards become more than marks; they’re a snapshot of growth, confidence, and character.

For families seeking academic enrichment in a warm, connected community, UC offers a grade-by-grade private school program that prepares students not just for the next test, but for high school, university, and beyond.
